CB05 Cliff Bungalow 4

Cliff Bungalow 4 is a townhouse building in Calgary's Cliff Bungalow community designed in collaboration with RNDSQR. It succeeds an earlier attempt to put eight apartment-style units on the site.

The site faces 5th Street, which is a fairly busy street which connects downtown Calgary to Elbow Drive SW. However, parking needed to be accessible from the adjacent lane, so the units couldn’t face the street in the traditional sense. We chose to create a walkway along the south side of the project that would allow access to each unit’s front door. As well, we stepped back the south wall of each unit so that each door was visible from the street. To achieve the desired third bedroom, we tucked a bedroom into the basement level below this walkway, each with windows that face a sunken garden the runs the length of the south property line.

Because the street is fairly busy, we chose to screen some of the end unit windows with a brise soleil. We did this by creating a pattern of openings in the brick wall that allowed light into hidden windows, but didn’t allow passers by to look in.

Each unit also has a large rooftop patio, each screened from the other by tall parapet walls.
